Get Auto Insurance Quotes

Whether you need to get auto insurance for the first time or are looking for quotes to compare to what you are paying now, here's how to do it!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone
  • Computer w/Internet access
  • Paper & pen
  • Your vehicle information (VIN#, year, make model, mileage, etc.)
  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of coverage you want. They are many different levels of car insurance, plus different deductible amounts to choose from. You first step in choosing the best coverage for you is understand these things. You will want to consider the age of your car, its value, where your park it, how much money you typically keep in savings, how much you can afford to pay each month/year in premiums (payments) and more. Do your homework. Use the resources below to learn about the different types of insurance before you start to get your quotes.

  2. Step 2

Choose your method: in-person, via phone, or online (or a combination of these.) You can get quotes using any or all of these means. Many people prefer the convenience and anonymity of the Internet and/or phone vs.. face-to-face. Plus, driving around to gets quotes can take more time and gas money. There are MANY online sources you can use--just type in "auto insurance quotes" in your favorite search engine to begin. If you have a specific provider in mind, such as Progressive or GEICO, you can use their sites as well. Or try a multi-networked site, like esurance.com. No matter what sites you use, they will typically all require you the enter the same data: make/model/year of your car, mileage driven, ZIP code, plus your personal data. Then you will be able to choose the levels of coverage and the deductibles, which is why you need to understand these concepts before you begin this step. Your quotes will usually be instant and may also be emailed to you at your request. Make sure to write/save all your quotes so you can compare them. You can also use the phone for this step, and supply your info to an agent who will use it to prepare your quotes, which they may give to you verbally or via email.

  3. Step 3

Compare your findings. Take all of the quotes you've obtained and look at them side by side. This way you'll be able to determine what the best choice is for you.

  4. Step 4

Ask questions. While doing your homework first is important, don't be afraid to ask about anything you don't understand, especially about unfamiliar terms. Not asking may cost you more money!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient. While the Interest is fast, some companies may take longer to provide your quotes than others. If using the phone, remember the agents are handling multiple calls all day long.
  • Be inquisitive. Make sure to ask questions about anything that's not clear to you--your money is at stake!
  • Take your time. Don't just go with the first quote you get--make sure to comparison shop so you can compare and get the best rates.
  • The lowest price isn't always the best choice. Just because the price is rock bottom doesn't make it the best option. Make sure you recognize the insurance provider (and if not, ask for references). Ask your friends & family for recommendations too, especially if they have had a negative experience with an auto insurance provider.
  • Make sure you understand EVERYTHING about the policy before you submit a payment. For example, make sure you understand the length/term of the quote. Some companies give 6 month quotes while other give 12 month quotes. Knowing everything about your quotes will also let you compare "apples to apples."
