Step 1
Opening attachments from anyone you don't know. This can be a clue that it could be a virus. Never open any attachment you did not specifically ask for.

Be sure to enable your pop-up blocker on your browser. Hit the X in the upper right hand corner of the browser. If you don't it could leave your computer susceptible to infection.

Step 3
The browser, even though it may have come with your computer, may not be safe. Use a more secure browser like Firefox and regularly check for updates.

Step 4
Check the news to stay up to date on phishing schemes which seem to be evolving all the time. Message boards and such can be very informative as well.

Step 5
Be skeptical of everything. If you get any off the wall emails stating such things as you have won the lottery, your favorite personality is dead, etc. chances are they are scam and someone trying to rip you off.
