The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends a 72-hour supply of food and water be set aside by families living in potential emergency areas. These areas are defined as zones that might suffer catastrophic damage in the event of a hurricane, flood or earthquake. Creating these emergency supplies of food and water is a reasonably easy task.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a pre-assembled kit from Survival Warehouse (see Resources below). Their products range from a simple one-day kit to more elaborate kits designed specifically for classrooms, commuters or those who think they may be evacuated. They include fanny packs as well as pre-packed backpacks.

  2. Step 2

Consider Nitro-Pak.com (see Resources below). They have a vast selection of emergency food as well as other equipment you might need in an emergency, such as an oven and a kit that creates a makeshift kitchen. They also guarantee price-matching on any item you purchase to create your emergency food supply.

  3. Step 3

Buy at Pleasant Hill Grain (see Resources below). They specialize in dehydrated food for emergency use and focus much of their products as being appropriate to an LDS (Latter-Day Saints) food storage plan. As a result, their kits provide more food than the amount needed to satisfy FEMA's 72-hour time frame. The smallest is a three-month supply for a family of four.

  4. Step 4

Consider BePrepared.com (see Resources below). It features a 72-hour pack of essential items. Its product, The Trekker™ IV kit, provides a family with a full set of preparation for emergencies. It includes lights, first aid and hygiene supplies and water. It also provides the basic foodstuffs a family needs for a 72-hour period as well as equipment for communication and shelter.
