A wide variety of products will whiten teeth, but be aware that some people have problems with the process. Here's what you can do to prevent some of the issues with teeth whiteners.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Two different dentists recommended over-the-counter teeth whitening strips to me. They said people were less likely to suffer sensitivity from those than from the stronger process they used. It certainly was less expensive as well.

  2. Step 2

No matter what brand you choose, people react differently to them. Some will have no problems and others will complain bitterly. You can see the negative reviews on sites like Amazon and consumer sites where people post reviews. Look at user comments on amazon.com and drugstore.com for the brand you are considering buying.

  3. Step 3

Number one rule to avoid problems: read the instructions that come with the product. If it says it should only be used for 30 minutes, don't leave it on longer. If it says use twice a day, don't use it more often than that.

  4. Step 4

Do not eat, sleep, drink, or smoke while the product is in place. In the case of the strips, they don't want you to accidentally swallow one. Don't use it while wearing metal braces.

  5. Step 5

It's best to use extra caution until you see how you react to a whitening product. Instead of using twice a day, go with once a day. It will take longer to achieve the level of whiteness that you want, but unless you're heading to the class reunion in a week, why rush and risk problems?

  6. Step 6

Don't use it when you have dental work coming up. They recommend not using for two weeks before a dental appointment and for two weeks after the work.

  7. Step 7

To prevent sensitivity in either the teeth or gums, you can use sensitive toothpaste during the period of time you're using the whitening product.
Brushing your teeth right before applying whitening strips can heighten sensitivity, so wait thirty minutes.

  8. Step 8

The products are not intended for use on children.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your mouth continues to be sensitive, stop using the product for several days or stop entirely.
