Many people have pets and they are a wonderful part of our life. Pets sometimes have accidents on your carpet. I used to work in the hospitality industry as a general manager of a hotel. We had people sneak their pets into our rooms on a fairly regular basis. We tried many things to remove the odors. Some work for a while and then the odor seems to reappear. We had professional carpet cleaners come in to treat our problem rooms on occasion. Hiring professionals to clean your home carpet on a regular basis can become very expensive. I asked one of the professional carpet cleaners that did an exceptional job on a particularly problem room what their secret was. He said it was to use live odor eating bacteria, or enzymes.
When my parents basement flooded due to a broken pipe, they began to have problems with a musty odor smell from their carpets. We went and bought some enzyme cleaner and deodorizer and it worked.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • rags
  • mild dish soap
  • rug deoderizer or baking soda
  • Enzym D Digester Deoderizer
  • Ozone Machine
  1. Step 1

Step 1. Prevention is always the best alternative to pet odors. However, it is not always possible. Prevention of odors consists of: vacuuming regularly to keep odors from setting in; using carpet sealant to protect the carpet before a pet has an accident.

  2. Step 2

Step 2. Accidents still may happen. It is important to deal with the accidents immediately blotting the urine out of the carpet and using a mild dish soap with water remove as much of the pet accident as possible. You can sprinkle carpet deodorant or baking soda on the spot allow it to sit and soak up the odor and then vacuum.

  3. Step 3

Step 3. The secret to removing the rest of the odor out of the carpet is to then coat the accident area with live enzyme digester/deodorant cleaner (I’ve used Enzym D Digester Deoderant). Enzyme digesters are pretty expensive, however the liquid is concentrated and is mixed with water before spraying on the spot where the odor is coming from. The spot needs to be soaked with the enzyme mixture for the enzymes to work.

  4. Step 4

Step 4. If the spot is older and you cannot find where the odor is coming from, one solution is to purchase a black light (hotels use black lights to inspect rooms often). The black light in a very dark room will show up any protein stains. You may find more stains than you bargained for. Odors may also be on the wall and in the furniture, the black light will show possible sources of the odor.

  5. Step 5

Step 5. If you have a room air cleaner make sure it is clean and functional and have it running. In the hotel industry we sometimes use Ozone machines. When using ozone machines to remove odors from the air it is important to be sure to never, never, never be in a room with an ozone machine that is running, and try to stay away for at least an hour or longer after it has finished. It is important to also make sure that there are no animals in the room with the ozone machine when it is running. They are effective at freshening the air and work on cigarette smells as well. But ozone can damage the lung tissues if you are in the room while it is running.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pets will revisit the same spot if they can smell the odor. It is important to neutralize the odor as quick as possible.
  • I listed the enzyme digester that I used, however, it is important to make sure the cleaner/digester you use has live enzymes. They will stay alive as long as there is food (the urine or other protein) for them to digest.
  • The enzymes are not harmful to you, and are considered a green method of cleaning without using all those chemicals.
  • Never stay in a room while an ozone machine is running.
  • Give it at least on hour before returning to a room after using an ozone machine.
  • Some people have used oxy-clean to remove stains from a carpet - It has on occasion caused the carpet to change colors after a period of time.
