Step 1
Start by asking your veterinarian if they have suggestions on where to leave your animal. Word of mouth references are far more secure than those kennels who bought a google ad online. Ask to see if they have any technicians who kennel dogs as a part time job (most do.)
-
Step 2
Call the local animal shelter and ask if they have any recommendations. These folks know a lot of dog people and can quickly point you in many directions. At our local shelter, they have a cabinet where brochures of various kennels are available to review. Also included is a rate sheet and recommendation from people in our community.

Step 3
Ask the neighbors and your coworkers. If someone has a great experience at a kennel, this means the job was done well. Troll for awesome references and track down a kennel this way.

Step 4
Go to the local pet store or dog bakery. While I don't necessarily think a Petsmart would have any leads, a small, local pet store would and this is a great place to find more personal recommendations.
