Since auto insurance is mandatory in most states, you can’t get around purchasing the coverage if you have a car. You can, however, make a few choices that can help you to earn a few premium credits to lower your insurance rate.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a safe driver class. Even if you don’t have points or derogatory items on your driving record, taking a safety driving course will earn a discount on your auto insurance physical damage premium. Before taking the safety driving course, however, make sure the course is one that is approved by your auto insurance carrier.

  2. Step 2

Get the latest auto safety gadgets. Auto insurance companies love gadgets that help to reduce the likelihood of a claim. Built in gadgets like anti lock breaks and automatic seatbelts are nice features. However, purchasing something like an anti theft device or car tracking system such as Lojack can help to lower your premium. It’s best to check with your auto insurance company to see how much of a credit you will receive before making the investment.

  3. Step 3

Garage your car. There is a higher likelihood of your car being stolen or damaged if its parked on the street than if it were parked securely in a garage. Garaging isn’t always an option, but if you know of someone on your block that is looking to rent out a garage, consider weighing the cost of garaging and the potential insurance savings.

  4. Step 4

Try for the AAA discount. Not all auto insurance companies offer a credit for having a membership to AAA, but you will never know if you don’t ask. Even if you don’t earn a premium savings, the benefits of having a AAA membership far outweighs the minimal annual membership fee.

  5. Step 5

Stick with your insurance company. Auto insurance companies reward loyalty. If you’ve been with your insurance company for a number of years, ask the agent how much of a discount your loyalty has earned. If you are not being rewarded for your loyalty, it’s time to shop around for a different auto insurance carrier.
