Things You'll Need:
- Thawed turkey
- Meat thermometer
- Foil
- Shallow roasting pan
- Salt
- Cooking Oil
- Your choice of seasonings
-
Step 1
Very important! (I always forget this part in every recipe and it's very annoying) PREHEAT OVEN! Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
-
Step 2
Remove neck and giblets from neck and body cavity. Next rinse the whole turkey with cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Now, lightly rub the entire turkey, inside and out, with salt.
-
Step 3
Place turkey in shallow roasting pan breast side up. Brush or rub skin with cooking oil and seasoning of your choice. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, making sure not to touch the bone. Cover the top of the turkey with foil, leaving an air space between the turkey and the foil.
-
Step 4
Roast the turkey for about 20 minutes per pound if 8 to 10 pounds or 14 to 16 minutes per pound for larger turkeys. Add 15 to 30 minutes for a stuffed turkey!
For the last hour of cooking remove the foil from the turkey and continue to roast. -
Step 5
When the thermometer reads 170 degrees F, remove the turkey from the oven. If you are not using a thermometer you can remove the turkey when the drumsticks move easily in their sockets and juices from the thigh runs clear.
If you are stuffing the turkey make sure that the stuffing reaches 165 degrees F.

on 11/19/2008 I love this article but tip if you add beer to the pan it gives it a more salty flavor and keeps it moist.
