Tough financial times or not, it is always a good idea to do what you can to save money. Even when the economy is in great shape, it is still necessary to be on the look out for that rainy day that seems to be looming just around the bend. Follow these tips and you will be on your way to being a frugal shopper.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Buy only what you will use. It doesn't save you any money if you won't use what you buy. Watch the groceries that you buy. Don’t be tempted to buy an off-brand item if you won’t eat it. Clothing that is the wrong size or doesn’t fit you personal style will hang in your closet unworn and be a waste of money.

  2. Step 2

Use coupons. Coupons can and should be used for all sorts of items. Look for stores that offer double coupon days and shop with your coupons on those special days. Use your coupons to buy something that is already on sale. This will increase your savings. Get with friends and family to trade coupons.

  3. Step 3

Shop around. Find the stores that offer the lowest price and shop there. Be sure to figure in the cost of traveling. If you have to drive a great distance to save a dollar or two, it isn’t really saving money. Also, be careful of purchases made on the internet. The price may be lower, but once you add the shipping and handling charges, you may end up paying more.

  4. Step 4

Consider quality when you are shopping. Paying next to nothing for socks that won’t last through several washes is not a savings. Try not to sacrifice taste when you buy groceries. Many off-brands that do not taste as well as the name brands can be used in recipes for casseroles and the like. Once they are “spiced up” and mixed with other ingredients they may taste just as good as the pricier brands.

  5. Step 5

Buy in bulk. If there are items that you use regularly, buy them in large quantities. Not only will you be paying less for the item, but you will also be saving time and money on traveling back and forth to the store. Consider “going in with” someone when you buy in bulk. Split the items and the cost, saving you money and not taking up your storage space.

  6. Step 6

Consider a membership to a wholesale club. Look for specials on those memberships. Sometimes they will have a two for one special that you can split with a friend or family member. Many wholesale clubs honor coupons and offer daily specials. Take advantage of these perks to save you even more money.
