If you own a car and you live in any of the states that require car insurance, you must apply for a car insurance policy. You have your pick of car insurance companies, offering a range of different types of coverages. There's car insurance for every individual, covering everything from theft and glass damage to uninsured motorist collisions. You can choose your bodily injury and medical coverages, and in some states you can even stack these insurance policies if you own two cars to double your payments.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate your VIN number and write down the make, model and year of your car. Most VIN numbers are on the driver's side of the windshield, where the bottom glass meets the vehicle, and are best viewed from the outside of the car.

  2. Step 2

Contact a car insurance agent and request a quote over the phone. Give the agent your car make, model, year and VIN number. Then choose a basic or comprehensive car insurance policy. Your agent will walk you through the steps, asking you a few simple questions along the way. If you want cheap car insurance, go to Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Log on to the Internet and find a car insurance provider. You can apply right on the website for any number of auto insurance policies. At some websites, you can apply for car insurance with several insurance companies at once to compare rates.

  4. Step 4

Click on the link to get car insurance or apply for a car insurance rate. Enter the information in the appropriate fields. This includes your personal information and the make, model and year of your car, along with the VIN number.

  5. Step 5

Complete the application online, then submit it through the company's server by clicking "Submit application." Electronically sign the documents the company requires. This includes the insurance policy documents and any additional waivers for stacked car insurance or added protection.

  6. Step 6

Receive your confirmation by email from the website where you submitted your car insurance application. Review the application and follow the instructions if you choose to buy the car insurance policy.
