Shopping at your local Farmers Market is a great way to support the farmers in your local area and to meet your neighbors and local business owners.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A basket to carry your new purchases in as you explore the market.
  • Small change for purchases
  • Good walking shoes
  • Water bottle
  1. Step 1

Find a nice basket that you can carry on your arm when you explore your local farmers market. Though some vendors may have sacks available, often they don't. Simply place fresh produce in your basket as you purchase it and "go green" thus saving the environment.

  2. Step 2

Stop at the bank and get that $20 broke down to some ones and fives for easy change making. Not all vendors are good with a calculator so be prepared to have your own change or exact change.

  3. Step 3

Wear good walking shoes or comfortable shoes. A hat or umbrella if the sun is out brightly to protect your head. Take a water bottle so that you can sip from it as you shop.

  4. Step 4

Get to know the various vendors. Are you looking for something specific? Look around the market, what sorts of vendors do you see? In our local farmers market we have a man that sells fresh honey, 2 different families that sell produce, a man that sells live stock (and the butcher store is around the corner from the market) as well as craft tables and homemade soap.

  5. Step 5

Often times there is music, and food or snacks available. Enjoy the day on the lawn listening to the music and partaking of fresh food that is locally grown.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember, the best organically food is grown closest to your home.
  • If you don't see something you want, ask around, someone is bound to have it or be able to bring it next time for you to purchase.
  • Take advantage of craft tables etc. for buying Christmas or birthday gifts.
  • Many Farmers Markets are open year round, they just go inside during the winter months.
  • Often FFA or FHA or other school programs are involved in Farmers Market.
  • Go out and support your community!
