Getting more than one price quote each time you renew insurance, is a step in the right direction.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

New insurance buyers get at least 2 or more prices before you buy insurance. If you're too lazy to make a phone call, that might save you a hundred dollars a year, just be lazy and poor.

  2. Step 2

For those that already have existing insurance, get another price quote at least one week before your old policy is going to expire. Insurance agents may be reluctant to talk to a person, who's policy is expiring the same day of your visit. (For all they know you've received a cancellation notice, which might suggest an undesirable risk).

  3. Step 3

There are numerous ways to get a toll free number for a price quote. They're advertised on television and the Internet. You may also get a card in the mail from an insurance company. The yellow pages is another source for insurance company phone numbers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never ignore this rule: always get one new price quote from a competitor, before you renew. When you get lucky and make the right call, that saves you $50. or more, you'll then understand the possible worth of a 5 or 10 minute phone call.
  • Personal visits to an insurance company can be better than a phone call. However limiting yourself to local insurance companies may limit the amount of money you can save.
  • Cheap insurance quotes may include less coverage, but don't assume that a higher price means more coverage. Read the fine print.
  • The number of auto accidents on your record will escalate your price for insurance, even if you were not a fault. Your being egotistical about having another driver pay for a scratch on your bumper that requires a good light and reading glasses to see, will probably cost you more at renewal time, if you insist on an accident report. Be smart or stubborn and poor.
