make Water Crackers aka Saltine Crackers

This is a very old recipe from the 1800's for the regular soup cracker we buy today at the store. The Cracker was known as the Water Cracker in by-gone days and today as Saltine Crackers, Soda Crackers or Soup Cracker.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

These are very easy to make and you can cut the cracker dough into any shape you want from little round soup crackers or round crackers for veggie spreads or flat and thin squares to be stored and used like box crackers.

  2. Step 2

You can add herbs and spices to make fancy crackers. Wheat, soy or whole grain flours can be used, if you'd like, for a more tasty cracker.

  3. Step 3

This recipe makes many crackers depending on the size and shape. You may have to divide the recipe in half or quarters to make the amount you want. In the old days they made large amounts at one to store them over winter. Have fun with this one!!!

  4. Step 4

    1 lb. Of Flour
1 teaspoon of Salt and the same of Soda
    1 tablespoon of Lard

  5. Step 5

In the words of our foremother up with sweet milk, beat well, roll thin. (in other words, add milk and mix until it is a dough that can be rolled out)

Roll it out very thin, as thin as you can without tearing and cut with a pizza cutter so they look like the box cracker. You can cut into shapes or break up after baked.

Bake Quickly on a cookie sheet.

For Saltine, shake salt over crackers when they first come of the oven.

Tips & Warnings
  • I bake crackers at 400 for about 5-10 minutes, you can tell when they are ready
  • This is a fun recipe to do with children
  • Watch closely, never leave unattended or unwatched or they will burn.

on 2/8/2009 Thank you for this recipe. A long time ago a local restaurant used to serve these as appetizers.
