How to Turn a Ball on a Wood Lathe

Wood lathe machines are used for mounting, turning and shaping items such as, posts, spindles and furniture legs. Instructions

1. Install a ball turning attachment to the live center on your wood lathe.

2. Fit a piece of wood into the tailstock end.

3. Position the ball between the two centers and lock the tailstock so it can't move.

4. Turn the tailstock, or dead center, so that pressure is placed on the ball from both ends.

5. Turn on the lathe and rotate the ball removing any high points with a gouge.

6. Loosen the tailstock and reposition the ball so that all high spots can be removed.

• When using wood lathe tools, apply gentle pressure against the wood stock.
