How to Cut Foam Padding
Replacing padding in an old piece of furniture is a simple and economic way to breathe new life into an old piece. Foam padding comes in thicknesses from one inch to one foot or more. But before the padding can be covered with new fabric, it must be cut to the proper dimensions. A pair of scissors may work for foam only an inch thick, but not for anything bigger. However, the key to successfully cutting foam may already be in your kitchen drawer.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Cardboard (optional)
- Permanent marker
- Safety goggles
- Electric kitchen knife

If the shape that needs to be cut out of the foam padding is a simple one, such as a square or rectangle, use the measuring tape to measure the dimensions the foam padding needs to be. If the shape is more complex and an older existing padding remains, use that piece as a template for the new padding. If the old padding is not available, lay a piece of cardboard over the surface where the padding will be and trace the correct shape for the foam. Cut out the template.

2
Use the permanent marker to draw the dimensions on to the foam padding, or trace the template shape on to the foam.

Put the safety goggles on. Place the measured and marked foam padding on a safe work area, such as wooden saw horses. Be sure to put the marked side facing up so you can see where the foam padding needs to be cut.

Plug in the electric kitchen knife, the same kind as used for cutting meats. Holding the foam in place with one hand, carefully cut the foam with the electric knife. Follow the marked lines. Take your time to avoid making mistakes.

Tips & Warnings
Recycle any foam scraps you may have for other projects.
After the initial foam shape is cut out, it can be further smoothed, shaped and molded with the electric kitchen knife to achieve the exact shape you require.
