Finding the IP address in a gmail email

There are a number of reasons someone would want to know what IP address one of their received emails originated from. If you have received harassing emails, for example, it helps to know what IP address is sending the emails to you, so you can have the correct printouts to take with you when you seek legal advice. When using gmail, it's very simple to find the sender's IP address. To do so, here's the steps to follow.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

In your gmail account, open the email you'd like to investigate.

  2. Step 2

On the upper right hand corner of each email, there's a button that says "Reply." The little blue downward-facing triangle indicates there's a drop-down menu. Click that blue triangle.

  3. Step 3

From that drop-down menu, select "Show original."

  4. Step 4

A new window will open once you've chosen to show the original file.

  5. Step 5

On this page (which is all text and code), a few lines down, find the line that begins with, "Received: from." This is telling you where the email originated. Follow that line all the way across. At the end, in brackets, is the IP address of the person or company who sent the email to you.
