Step 1
Choose kennel boarding for a straight-forward solution. Make sure you have good references you trust before entrusting you pal(s) to a kennel for care. Go over and inspect the conditions for yourself so you will know exactly where your pet(s) will be staying. Make sure it is clean, roomy and acceptably comfortable.
-
Step 2
Hire a professional service for home care if you don't want to stress your pet with moving and adapting to the new surroundings of a kennel. Again, ask for references. Make sure the pet sitter is reliable, bonded and knowledgeable. Meet the care-giver in person and see how she or he interacts with your dog, cat, bird or other pet. If this person will be visiting or staying at your home, you want to feel confident that both your pets and your home will be treated well.
-
Step 3
Have a friend or neighbor come over. Although this is likely the least expensive choice, it may or may not be the best. Be careful you don't endanger your friendship. You want someone who knows animals, feels comfortable with them and is RESPONSIBLE. If something goes wrong it could damage your relationship with this person as well as endanger your pet. Remember that things do happen, and should your pet fall ill or be injured, you will want someone who knows what to do in an emergency.
-
Step 4
Board at another private home with a professional care giver. This is probably the most expensive option. Once again, inspect both the accommodations and the person who will be taking care of your pet(s). Note if there are other animals and how do they get along with yours. Check that it is a good, clean, comfortable environment and your pet sitter inspires confidence. If you find a good home that will take in your pal(s) and provide a vacation-style resort, you may find the extra expense is worth it to give you peace of mind and to know your animal is having a good time. Dogs and cats (and birds) are likely to get more affection, attention and care with this option.
-
Step 5
You might be able to leave a healthy cat with sufficient cat litter, food and fresh water for a few days. But if you can get someone to look in on the cat once and a while, you can be sure nothing unexpected happens. Dogs are very social and should not be left alone for more than a single overnight. Birds, too should not be left for any period of time. They are delicate in health and can become destructive if bored. Don't forget about rabbits, gerbils, snakes, fish and other pets. All pets are dependent on us and when we take on the responsibility of their welfare, we must see it through even when we are away from them.
