How to Choose a Niche for a Website
To choose a niche that will create a successful website takes a bit of research into the supply and demand on the Internet. The steps below can help you select a niche that has a demand of Web surfers that is higher than there are websites that meet the demand. This can make the difference between creating a website that is doomed to fail and creating a website that will succeed.

1
Make a list of all the things you are passionate about. It's the things you are passionate about that will create a website rich in content, providing information that is real and trustworthy, rather than empty fluff.
-
2
Study each item on your list and ask yourself, "what keyword would I type into Google's search box to find the most focused website on the subject?"
-
-
3
Write the keyword beside each listed item you believe would be the best term for Google to run its search.
-
4
Purchase a dependable and trustworthy keyword research tool. There are many such tools to choose from online. Some are free, and some are expensive. One of the most popular is wordtracker.com, which offers a free trial (see Resources below).
-
5
Choose the keyword from the list that you are the most passionate about and enter it into the keyword box of the search tool.
For instance, if one of your niche ideas (passions) on the list is "making quilts," and the search term (keyword) you think is best is "quilting," that is the word you will place in the keyword box to find out how many people have done a search in the last month typing that word into Google and other search engines. -
6
Enter it and wait for the results. In seconds you will see a list of keywords with "quilting" being the first keyword listed, as well as other keywords related to quilting. Beside each keyword will be two numbers. The first number is the demand, or how many people typed that keyword into Google. The second number is a listing of websites that are already using that keyword.
-
7
Check the numbers. For instance, if the demand for your keyword is 33,665, and the supply is 87,358, then the competition is too stiff and it would be extremely difficult to compete in an already saturated niche. However, on this list of quilting keywords, you might see the keyword "patchwork quilts" with a very high demand and a very low supply. In that case, patchwork quilts would be an excellent choice for your website niche.
