Before graduating from a journalism program, an internship may be required. If one is not required by the college or university, an internship may still be needed in order to have real-world writing experience. To get those valuable magazine clips that are needed for a resume, and to make contacts in the magazine industry, it's important to get the best internship possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply to several tiers of magazines. Just like with college applications, it's a good idea to apply to places you know you can get into as well as your dream places. If you don't get an internship at a large-circulation magazine, you will have fall-back internships to choose from.

  2. Step 2

Use your professors' connections if you are still in journalism school. Most professors have connections with print publications, either through former workplaces, friends in the industry or former students who have gone on to write for magazines. Those connections may land you an interview with a magazine that would be hard to get into otherwise.

  3. Step 3

Interview with the magazines that have offered interviews. Dress professionally and bring your best writing clips. A small portfolio of clips that the interviewer can keep will work best.

  4. Step 4

Plan for any costs associated with the internship. Most magazine internships do pay, but the cost of living away from home during the internship period may be more than what you make. You may need to find a fellow intern to share living quarters with, or take out a student loan if you are still in school.

  5. Step 5

Do your best work during your internship. Most of the work will probably not be as glamorous as you pictured, but don't complain. Do what is asked of you, even if it's fetching coffee and searching through file cabinets. Once you are seen as a hard-working person who can be trusted, you will be given more challenging assignments.
