Step 1
Avoid GossipingShhh...Don't talk about it. It is better if your boss doesn't know you're looking for a job somewhere else. If you're planning on moving to another company, do not advertise to other people in the office you're searching. If your current employer finds out they're going to need to replace you, its possible they'll find a replacement before you find a new job. Or if your boss thinks you're becoming disloyal to the company, he or she may make things very difficult on you until you leave.
-
Step 2
Don't Search At WorkAvoid searching while you're at work. Working on your resume or applying for a job online while on company time could get you in trouble. Plus, it doesn't send a good message to your future employer if they see you've been emailing them during the business day. Search for jobs at night and on the weekend. It may cut into your free time, but it will allow you to search freely and give you the best results.
-
Step 3
Schedule Your TimeCoordinate your interviews. If you schedule a lunch interview or one early in the morning before work; be sure you'll be finished to make it to work on time. A suggestion would be to take the day off and schedule as many interviews as possible during that day. Or perhaps you can move your lunch break earlier or later.

on 9/2/2009 It's a downright cheek if you search for jobs at your current employer! If you use sites like monfix.com, you can specify your job search criteria and monfix will make a list of jobs for you to apply for and email them to you. Saves time and saves you getting caught out by the boss.

on 12/4/2008 Many companies have policies in place that prohibit these activities during work hours, with good reason. You're giving sound advice here.

on 11/29/2008 Great tips!!! Another great tip is to request that your boss not be contacted as a reference, make sure you give other qualified references that do not include anyone working at your present job. Most companies you interview with is aware of this but I would just restate the obvious.
