Begging is a very common dog behavior problem and is also very easy to stop. The most important step to follow is consistency. Everyone in the house has to be consistent. In this article you'll discover a simple method to stop your dog's begging forever.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Taste deterrent
  1. Step 1

Make sure that every one in your house wants to stop this behavior. In my experience, there is always someone in the family who likes to give the dog tidbits at the dinner table or while eating. If everyone is not being consistent, it is not fair to your dog.

  2. Step 2

Find a taste deterrent that your dog does not like. There are commercial taste deterrents like bitter apple or sour grapes that you can find in most pet supply stores or you can make one up on your own. Mixing some Tabasco sauce and vinegar is usually enough to work.

  3. Step 3

Test the deterrent to make sure your dog does not like it and for your dog to make an association with it. Put a little on a piece of cheese or hot dog. If your dog does not eat the cheese or hot dog, your dog has just told you that he does not like the smell and taste of the deterrent.

  4. Step 4

The next time you sit down for dinner make sure that the deterrent is on the table with you. If your dog comes up and starts begging, take a little piece of whatever you are eating and cover it with the taste deterrent.

  5. Step 5

Once you have it covered with the deterrent, offer it to your dog. Your dog will remember the taste and smell and turn her head. If your dog goes to the next person at the table, have them repeat the process.

  6. Step 6

Stay consistent and use a deterrent that your dog really does not like. If you do, your begging problem will become a thing of the past.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you want to give your dog leftovers, just make sure that you feed it from his or her own bowl, not from the table.
  • Never train when you are stressed or tired.

on 11/25/2008 Great article, I would never use grapes as a deterrent. Grapes just aren't healthy for dogs, It cause Kidney failure. but other than that, I would be willing to try a deterrent. 5*
