How to cut your Directv bill using Tivo

A few months back I realized that I watch very little 'live' TV, I pretty much just watch my favorite programs that Tivo records for me. I also noticed that my Tivo is never even close to being filled up. Here's a way to save some cash on your Directv bill without sacrificing your TV viewing pleasure.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Directv account
    • Tivo unit
      • 1

Go through your Tivo and select loads of programs to be recorded in the coming week.

      • 2

After your Tivo has recorded a few weeks of programs go to the Directv website, login, and change your programming to the lowest setting which for me is the Family Plan.

      • 3

Over the next week just watch programs loaded on your Tivo and the basic channels available on Directv. Trust me you'll never miss the premium channels.

When your Tivo starts to run out just go back to Directv and up your programming level to what you had.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Empty out the 'Recommended' area of your Tivo before starting, you'll need the space

    • Don't wait too long to restore your Directv service to your normal level once Tivo starts to empty out.

That's pretty slick, Norman. I never would have thought of doing that. DirecTV did tell me a couple of years ago that there's a surcharge for changing your service more than once in a thirty day period. I don't know if that still applies but it might be best to record a month of programs before you do this if you can.
