How to Create a Gmail Email Address

When Gmail, Google's email service, first launched in 2004, the service was available by invitation only. Slowly, word got out and the service became more popular, coveted by those who didn't have an invitation. Since 2007, Gmail has been open to everyone. Gmail has acquired nearly a quarter of a million monthly users. And you can become a Gmail user for free.

Visit the website Gmail.com. Click the button "create an account" at the bottom, right-hand corner of the screen, below the login area.

Fill out your first and last name in the form. The name you enter will be attached to the email address; when an email is sent from you, your name will show up next to it. Enter your real name or an alias. The name can be changed at any time.

Choose the name you'd like for your actual email address for the Desired Login Name. Choose something professional if you plan to use the email for work-related contacts.

Choose a password for the email account. Choose something that is a combination of capital letters, lowercase letters and numbers for maximum security for your account.

Fill out the rest of the form, including your current email address (for verification if you forget your password later), read the terms of service agreement and click "I accept. Create my account" at the bottom of the page.
