Step 1
Visit the Google alerts website for a description of the service and short user instructions.
-
Step 2
To learn more about how the google com alerts service works, click on "Google Alerts help" on the bottom toolbar. It gives you a rundown of how to set up your alerts, how the searching works, what sorts of things you have access to, how often you can receive updates and how to manage your user account.
-
Step 3
Decide what topic you'd like to monitor. If you write about horses, you'll probably want to watch the words horses, equestrian, and things like that. You can monitor the news, websites and blogs. If you choose to monitor all sources, you can use the "comprehensive" alert.
-
Step 4
Verify your alert setup once you've entered the information and you'll receive google alerts as often as google notices changes either by the RSS feed of websites, blogs and news feeds, or by crawling their site. Every time Google sees the word you chose, you will know about it.
-
Step 5
When you get your first alert, you can begin to follow the articles discussing your topic and get clues about things you should be writing about, and advanced notice of trends and emerging connections.
-
Step 6
Comment on articles that feature information about your topic, and share links to your work (when relevant and helpful). The blog post that comes up on your Google alert is likely new and your early comment will be seen by all who read it. Additionally, the link to your work can direct traffic and help you build a reader base. You make money online when people click on your ads. The more people you have visiting your site, the more money you can make potentially.
