Grow Trees for Profit

Have you been looking for an easy business start, but don't have much money to invest? Well growing and selling trees fits that need. Check it out.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • A little space
  • pruning shears
  • rooting hormone
  • containers
  • soil
  1. Step 1

First, choose the types of trees you would like to grow. You can start by using your own trees or shrubs. Which ever you decide it is very important that you find out what the actual name of the tree or shrub. Before you start cutting though you need to gather your containers and soil.

  2. Step 2

Second, go to your local coffee shop and explain what your doing and ask if you can have their discarded plastic milk containers. Recycle. Reuse. :) Make sure you rinse the containers then cut a hole in them as shown in the picture. As far as soil is concerned you have a few options dig from your yard, purchase potting soil or create your compost.

  3. Step 3

Third, You will need to purchase some type of rooting hormone. Go to your local nursery and explain to them what type of tree you want to root and they can recommend the right rooting hormone. Also purchase a pair of pruning shears or heavy duty scissors. I always find them in garage sales for next to nothing.

  4. Step 4

Fourth, Cut about 6" off the tips of the tree and remove the leaves from the bottom 2", dip the bottom of the cutting in the rooting compound and place into your soil filled container. Keep it well watered, but not soggy. Now comes the patience... Once the trees have grown to about 12" you can sell them for anywhere between $5 and $20 right from your home or local farmers market.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can root more cuttings by placing them in a rooting tray and once they take root and get stronger, transplant into your larger containers.
  • If it is cold cover your cutting with plastic to protect from frost
  • Even a spare bedroom can work to grow your trees. Just put in a flourescent lightin system
  • You can do the same thing with indoor plants as well
