Each of us has it inside to give a thoughtful and meaningful Thanksgiving Day Prayer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guest list for Thanksgiving Dinner
  • Host's full name
  1. Step 1

As the person giving the Prayer, it is important to know the people attending the dinner as well as the host. If there have been any immediate family members that have passed on during the year, it would be nice to mention them in remembrance. Some pre-prayer fact gathering may be necessary depending on what you know versus what should be shared with all in attendance.

  2. Step 2

In our house, Thanksgiving Dinner is served buffet style. For this reason we have our prayer prior to serving, since we don't all sit down to the table at the same time. This also avoids any discomfort of someone midway through eating at the time of prayer.

  3. Step 3

The prayer giver should be a key figure to the gathering. A simple statement for all to gather around and join hands is a way to begin and prepare everyone for the prayer that follows. Be sure to thank the host for opening up their home for the gathering. Thank the cooks for their time in planning and preparing the feast. Thank all those in attendance for sharing of their time for the spirit of the holiday. Be thankful for the health of all family and friends near and far.

  4. Step 4

Be personal without adding too many details. Remember that just because you have insider knowledge of a situation, doesn't mean everyone there should hear about it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sincere
  • Speak from the heart
  • Keep it short

on 12/6/2008 Great stuff. My uncle has a habit of making the prayer like 20 minutes long so I can relate to the short prayer, although it should still be long enough to express thankfulness.
