Who wants to run? Getting to the "park" is half the battle.
I took this picture. Whee!

If you're packing a few extra but too busy to go to the gym, here are some simple tips on altering your diet and schedule to get results around your waistline.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lots of Water
  • A Pedometer (Not Entirely Necessary)
  • Willpower
  1. Step 1
    Water. It's easy!

    Water. It's easy!

Drink water. It is near obscene how much water you should be drinking every day, and how little the average person (such as myself) actually consumes. Drink a full glass of water before and after a meal.

  2. Step 2
    Take your time.

    Take your time.

Eat slower instead of less. Try to take a sip of water between bites. Put down your next mouthful to momentarily contemplate the meaning of life.

  3. Step 3
Walking should always be this fun.

Walking should always be this fun.

Stroll, but frequently. Find really simple ways to add walking into your day. Park further away from the mall, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk up the escalator, and laugh at the poor suckers who take that much longer to get to the top.

  4. Step 4
    Food coloring doesn't count.

    Food coloring doesn't count.

Color coordinate your food. Make sure your meal has lots of colors. I've heard 4-5 colors on your plate is best, and ensures you've got vegetables. Anyway, it looks prettier.

  5. Step 5
    Keep your mind fit.

    Keep your mind fit.

Remember, you're not on a diet. The word "diet" carries a lot of baggage. You're striving to implement easy ways to be healthy and smarter about your body. Your body will thank you.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you've got a pedometer, use it. Keep track of how much you walk per week, and try to beat it the next.
  • If you've got a digital scale, keep track. But don't get obsessive with it, because that could get dangerous. Always remember water weight counts for a lot.
  • Find hobbies besides stationary ones. You like photography? Go hiking. You like knitting? Find a social group.
  • Energize your stationary activities. Play computer games? Get some light weights to lift during downtime. Avid solitaire player? Listen to podcasts. They're free and, depending on the content, work out your most important muscle.
  • Be happy.
  • Your body is a means to enjoying life, not the end-all-be-all.
