Save Money on Holiday Travel

Traveling can get expensive. Here are some tips for saving money on holiday travel.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Meals and Snacks: Instead of going to fast food restaurants go to the grocery store and buy snacks, drinks, bread, peanut butter, and jelly. Now make sandwiches. Pack these along with napkins. Then you can get out and stretch your legs and eat for free at rest stops. If you are going on longer trips and staying at motels bring some trail mix, cereal, string cheese, fruit, and microwave mac and cheese. This lets you eat and cook in the motel.

  2. Step 2

Gas: Drive conservatively and you can likely save some significant cash. Accelerating and braking can result in up to 33% more gas usage in typical highway driving. Additionally trying to drive a consistent 55 mph can save you significant money. Each 5 mph that you drive over 60 mph can cost you an additional 5% in gas. Try to anticipate slow downs so you can gradually coast.

  3. Step 3

Cancel: Cancel anything that you do not need such as newspaper and magazine delivery. They typically will credit the canceled issues toward the cost of future delivered issues.

  4. Step 4

Trade: Offer to trade pet sitting and house sitting with neighbors. This will help save everyone money and let them and you have a win win situation.
