In this impersonal modern age, we meet and work with people who we don't know. Also, because of a multitude of rules, regulations (and just plain courtesy), we may never know much about the people around us on a daily basis. But, if you have children, or are a woman living alone, you are especially vulnerable to the anonymous people who you see on a daily basis.

A new Website, Criminal Searches, is an amazing tool that let's you check the criminal background of people you may have concerns about, or check for criminal records of the people who live in your neighborhood. Here's what you need to know.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An Internet connection.
  • For a check on an individual, you'll need a first and last name.
  • To check your neighborhood, you just need your own address as a starting point.
  1. Step 1
Employment background check on the Web

It's almost impossible to list all the occassions where a quick criminal check on someone might be the prudent thing to do. For example, millions of people are using online dating services to meet people. You can't be in a more vulnerable position than starting a romantic relationship with someone you don't really know.

Also, if you have children, you want to know that they are safe with day care workers, teachers, and neighbors. Checking for criminal records is not paranoia, it's just protecting your child. No one will alert you that they are a child predator.

So, here's how to use this amazingly fast, Internet tool.

  2. Step 2

Log on to Criminal Records, a new Internet site that searches Public Databases for any listing of criminal records for the names that you enter. For the most accurate results, you need to know the first and last name of the person that you have selected and the city they live in. This sounds obvious, but make sure they don't live in a suburban township, for example.

  3. Step 3

You can even check your neighborhood as a whole! Using a location search feature, just type in your home address. You can see who is living in your area with a criminal history. I found out that there must be a half-way house of sexual predators about two miles from where I live. About six profiles of men with sex crimes popped up at a single address! The information that was provided included the charges and provided photos of the men.

To check some other area of town, just find a correct address from that area and enter that information.

  4. Step 4

From start to finish, the whole process takes less than a minute. You can do a background check for criminal records in less than a minute.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Website emphasizes that sometimes criminal records in various states list charges, as well as convictions. Be sure to read the listing carefully. Just because someone was charged with a crime at one time does not make them a criminal.
  • Just because someone doesn't have a criminal record doesn't mean they are "safe". Always use reasonable caution with people that you don't know.

on 11/29/2008 When I was searching for schools for my daughter, I used a search site such as this. I was shocked to find sex offenders on the same road as one of the schools I was considering. Even though the offender was down the road, I was alarmed. I was no longer interested in the school and worked to find another for my daughter.
