Step 1
Well before the video interview send your resusume, portfolio or other materials you wish the interviewer to view. Depending on the form of you material this can be done by email, fax, or through the post office. Ask the hiring personal what they prefer before sending the material. Always send a copy of a resume when sending other requested papers, this make it easier for them to keep things straight.
-
Step 2
Get information on what website you are going to be logged into well before the interview is set to happen. Connect to the website and run a technical check before hand. This will allow you to ask question if needed about the technical set up.
-
Step 3
Clear your surrounding of distractions. Kids, pets, and other family members should not be within hearing distance. Future employers will not be impressed by kids screaming and dog barking.
-
Step 4
Dress for the interview as you would a in person interview. You may be on a one on one interview but more then likely the video will be seen by many people. Yes, appearance counts. Don't for get to wear shoes.
-
Step 5
As you start the video introduce yourself in a very short manner. This will help the interviewer know they got the right paperwork and are in the right mind frame.
-
Step 6
When in front of the camera move slow, avoid any fast movements. Fast movement create unattractive video feedback.
-
Step 7
Eye contact in a interview is important. To gain eye contact look into the video camera not into the eyes of the video projection you are seeing. If you look at the screen all the time it will appear as you are drifting off. Setting your camera right above the screen my help in this situation.
-
Step 8
At the end of the interview make sure to thank your interviewer for their time and let them know you are interested in meeting with them in person (If not a full telecommuting position).
-
Step 9
At the end of the video interview let the interviewer end the session before logging off.

on 1/18/2009 Good advice, especially about where to focus your attention. Though a video interview does seem like something from the Jetsons :)
