Step 1
The first step is to come up with a game plan. Make out a list of people you exchange gifts with. Write out a limit amount next to their name and STICK WITH that amount. Stores make it easy to be compulsive!!! Don't give in!
-
Step 2
Search online for gifts... and COMPARE prices!!! Take into consideration shipping costs, handling costs, etc. If EBay has an item for $5 plus $4 shipping and the same item is on Amazon for $7 free shipping, it's a no brainer! Google product search is a good way to lay all of the items out in front of you and compare prices easily. Take advantage of this search engine!
-
Step 3
If you exchange gifts at work, suggest doing a "Secret Santa" instead of getting gifts for everyone. The other people at work will surely agree to this... we are all in the same boat and they will appreciate saving some money and stress!
-
Step 4
Consider gifting only for children. Christmas means more to them than the adults and besides, how often to you get a lousy gift from a relative that you never use anyway??? Another option is applying the Secret Santa concept with your family as well!
-
Step 5
Take advantage of the day-after-Thanksgiving sales. Set your alarm!!! Many many retailers offer AMAZING deals first thing in the morning... and I mean first thing! Wake up and save some money, it will be worth it!
-
Step 6
Buy all of your wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, etc. at stores like Big Lots and Ocean State Job Lot... it is MUCH cheaper than some of the other big box stores! While you are there check out things like socks, underwear and t-shirts... the kinds of things every man gets for Christmas.
-
Step 7
Where you can, make homemade gifts! Are you known for making really awesome jams? Jar em' up! Make the jars look decorative by adding ribbons and handmade labels. This is a REALLY inexpensive way to give gifts... plus you can cover a whole bunch of people with one batch.
-
Step 8
Pay with CASH only!!!!! Credit card companies make money on your purchases with interest rates, which makes your gifts cost even more! Cash is the cheapest way to go!
-
Step 9
Decorate your home this year with homemade items. String popcorn and cranberries the old fashioned way for your tree! Use clippings from the plants in your landscape to decorate your mantle instead of buying greens. This allows you to be creative AND resourceful!
