1
Feel the music. This means more than listening for the rhythm of the funk song but also letting it overcome you. Pick out the bass line or the slowest possible beat to dance to that is in step with the song.
-
2
Let the music move you. Your hips should constantly keep pace with the song, rocking back and forth in sync. Your appendages (arms, legs, and head) should act as a wave that is generated from your hips. This is an original freestyle way to dance to funk music.

Watch how the greats do it. Watching older dance shows such as "Soul Train" will give you pointers on some of the popular dances that were performed when funk was at its height. Take some tips on the dancers' movements and apply them in your own dancing.
-
4
Ask about the oldies. Your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles may remember conventional funk dances such as the the Funky Chicken or the ever-popular Robot. All of these are great conventional dances that are often performed to funk and have become mainstays.

5
Practice to make perfect. One of the best and most private places to practice your funk music dance moves is in the bathroom on a slick tile surface. This allows you to practice in front of a mirror while having a danceable surface that will most resemble a club dance floor. You will also have privacy in case you aren't ready to unleash your moves into the world quite yet.
