Make sure you have a good attitude. In the earliest stages of flirting it's never a good idea to complain about your job, your roommate, your ex, or anything unpleasant. Keep the conversation nice and light. The best way to scare someone away is to go into a long, drawn out story about your life the second you meet someone new. Good topics are movies, books, music, travel and hobbies.

Maintain good eye contact, not too much, but not too little. If you're going to break eye contact, look down at your hand holding your drink, smooth your skirt or pants or look at something in front of you on the table or bar. It's never a very good idea to look at your watch, check out other people, text or dig around in your purse. You will either give off the impression that you're bored or nervous.

Maintain an air of mystery. It's not a good idea to lay all your cards on the table within the first 10 minutes of talking to someone. Not spilling your guts immediately will make the other person curious to find things out about you, and also have to work a little to get to know you. Most people enjoy a bit of a challenge while flirting!

Kudos on the profanity point. It is so true that you lose all credibility if you speak gutter. -
