Making a crumble is a quick, easy way to turn fresh fruit, even canned fruit, into a dessert. Here's how to make this using apples and cranberries, but you can substitute other fruits and berries if you like.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • apples
  • cranberries (dried or fresh)
  • sugar
  • flour
  • sugar
  • butter or margarine
  1. Step 1

Peel the apples, then slice them into a shallow baking dish. Sprinkle the cranberries over the apple slices. Sprinkle some sugar over the apples and cranberries.
I used three apples, but the amount depends on what you have and the size of the baking dish.

  2. Step 2

In a separate bowl, mix together some flour and sugar. The amount isn't crucial. Add a lump of margarine or softened butter. Using a knife or fork, blend the margarine into the flour and sugar mixture. Use sort of a cutting motion rather than a stirring motion.

  3. Step 3

The flour/sugar/margarine mixture is the topping for the fruit. The goal is to achieve a crumbly texture. If the mixture is too dry, add more margarine. If too buttery, then add more flour. You can add cinnamon if you want to complement the apple flavor.

  4. Step 4

Once the topping is suitably crumbly, sprinkle it over the fruit. You want it mostly covered.

  5. Step 5

Cover the baking dish and place it in a 350 degree oven. Cook it long enough for the apples to soften and for the crumb top to slightly brown.

Tips & Warnings
  • The crumble topping works for other fruits like pears or berries.
  • Use more (or less) sugar to suit your taste. The sweetness of the fruit can determine this. If you use a baking apple that's more tart, then add more sugar.
