How to get a toddler to give up his or her pacifier with ease and little or no tears.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Your child, their pacifyer,a pin and lots of patients.
  1. Step 1

The first thing you need to do is to talk with your child about how big they are getting. Tell them of things they can do now that they couldn't do before. Lots of praise and telling them how much you love them and how proud you are of them. Talk about and show them their pacifier. Show them baby pictures if you have any of them when they were a baby with the pacifier. Show recent pictures of them without it. Talk about how big boys and girls don't need pacifier anymore, that only babies need them and how big they are.

  2. Step 2

You really want getting rid of the pacifier to be their idea. The first thing to do is to get rid of all pacifiers but one. Now, without them seeing you take a pin or something sharp, make a small hole in the center of the pacifier. As time goes on the pacifier will start to flatten. You may need to at times make the hole bigger, but do it gradually. Yes, it will be come flat and maybe sticky, yes this is the point!

  3. Step 3

You child will start to complain about it and put it down. They may want you to fix it, they may fuss a little, but you need to stand firm and tell them it can't be fixed. They will continue to use it and eventually will decide it isn't good anymore and put it down for good!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure other family members know what you are doing and have them to get rid of any they may have at their house. Stand firm and stand together. It will work with patients.
  • Do NOT use scissors to cut pacifier as this may leave jagged or loose edges and may present a choking hazard!
