Get Professional Music Composition & Notation Software For Free

For the composer or songwriter who's dying to use a well thought out, professional scoring interface, but doesn't have infinite funds to purchase big name notation software which can run in the $150.00 to $800.00 ballpark, I recommend trying out MuseScore, a program that, in my opinion, offers a very comparable interface at NO cost.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A PC / Laptop & Live Connection To The Internet, and a Windows or Linux OS.
  1. Step 1

Scroll towards the bottom of this page, under "Resources" click on "Go to MuseScore.org" (you can also download your desired version directly by clicking on the "Download Windows Version," or "Download Linux Version" resource links located in the same page region...using this option you can skip steps 2 and 3).

  2. Step 2

In the top right hand of the MuseScore.org page, click on the "Download Free" tab.

  3. Step 3

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and chose the appropriate version of MuseScore for your OS: Windows or Linux.

  4. Step 4

After downloading completes, open the installation package and follow the setup prompts.

  5. Step 5

You should now have a fully functional copy of MuseScore ready to serve all your music writing needs!

Tips & Warnings
  • If you make it big in the music industry, you should show MuseScore some love by making a donation. I think it's great that someone would spend so much time developing such a streamlined scoring program just to turn around and distribute it for free!
  • Be careful, it's addictive!!!
