If you are considering purchasing a domain name, you might want to check to see if your desired domain name is available and how much it would cost. If your domain name is not available as a .com, you might be able to get it as a .info, .net, or .biz. But how do you do a domain name check to find out what is available? Follow these simple steps to do a domain name check.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  1. Step 1

Go to a website where you can buy a domain name. GoDaddy.com is a great choice (see the Resources section below to a direct link to GoDaddy.com).

  2. Step 2

Type your desired domain name into the search box on the website. Almost all websites where you can buy a domain name has this search box. At GoDaddy.com, this search box is on the homepage.

  3. Step 3

Review the results. If your domain name is not available, the website will usually provide a list of similar names that might work for you. If you do not like any of these choices, you can also try changing the ending of the website (.net, .com, .info, etc.). If these options do not work for you, consider a different direction. Search the internet for "website naming tips" to find help naming websites.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most websites that sell domain names also sell website hosting. You can usually find domain name and hosting packages that fit your needs to save you money.
