How to Build Pole Barn Outbuildings

Pole barns are a fine alternative to more expensive buildings. With care during construction, they are both economically sensible and provide all the basic needs of more elaborate barns. Constructed of wood and sheet metal, pole barns are effective and attractive buildings to provide storage space and shelter for livestock.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your poles every 2 to10 feet. Materials selected will affect the length of your pole barn. If you use metal poles, they must be placed closer together, but if you are using wood, they can be spaced farther apart. The distance between poles needs to be a maximum of 10 feet, and the building can be as long or as short as you want it to be.

    • 2

Dig post holes deep enough to secure the pole firmly. Ideally, they need to be at least 18" deep. Wet soil requires deeper holes to ensure stability in the poles. Concrete is used to secure the poles. If you do not build it firmly, you will face constant maintenance and rebuilding.

    • 3

Place the construction materials overlapping one another, and truss them at each level. If you layer the materials over one another, you ensure a stable hold. If you need to create a door, this is the place to do it.

    • 4

Trussing is vitally important when building pole barns. If you use metal sheets during construction, you must truss them at each level. If not done well, poor trussing can create a loose overall structure.

    • 5

Roof your barn. Metal is cheaper than wood and will last longer. Just make sure you do not build the roof too high, or your structure will wear out more quickly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Construct your barn on a high ground area. Placing your barn on a proper pad can make the difference between a usable building or a mud pit.

  • Always use caution when working with construction tools.
