Cycling shoes are specifically designed to lock into a bike pedal with a particular clip-in system. They are usually not needed by the the amateur or casual rider. However, bicycle shoes can provide a more efficient ride for those who are competitive or non-competitive but riding long distances, such as to work and back.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what the size of your street shoes is. Occasionally you might want to go up a half or a full size, but you won't know until you try a pair of cycling shoes on. Starting with the size of your street shoes is a good idea.

  2. Step 2

Visit a local cycling store and talk to the employees. The staff is well informed and knows what to suggest. It will be helpful if you already know your shoe size, the clip-in system that you have (or are looking at) and an idea of how often you will be riding and on what types of terrain.

Try on a few different brands. Try Pearl Izumi, Sidi, Shimano and Nike. As with clothing sizes varying by manufacturer, so can the fit of a shoe vary by the company who makes it. Nike tends to run small. Shimano tends to run true to street size.

Look for features in the shoe that you need. Do you need a waterproof shoe because you go off-roading? Do you need a breathable shoe? Do you have wide feet? It's important to consider factors like these so that you can find the ideal shoe for you.

  5. Step 5

Test drive the new shoes. Most stores will let you walk around with the shoes and even try a quick ride around the block. You absolutely must do this. Make sure you get in writing what the store's return policy is. Sometimes you can't return a shoe once it has left the store so be very certain that your shoe fits your foot and your needs.
