How to Stop Severe Headaches

Many individuals suffer from headaches. However, when the pain is so severe it interferes with your ability to function, it's time to get help. Severe headaches can be a side affect of medications or result from stressful situations. There are many solutions available that can provide relief.

Instructions

    • 1

Try to release the tension. Place two fingers on each of the temples on your head. Slowly massage the area for a few minutes. Take deep breaths and try to relax. If your headache is caused by stress, this exercise may help.

    • 2

Rub your neck and back. Tension held in your neck and back can cause severe headaches. Firmly rub the tops of your shoulders and around your neck. Once you feel a tender spot, spend some time massaging this area. The tenderest spots are where our tension is being held.

    • 3

Use aromatherapy. Scents such as peppermint and eucalyptus can relax the tension in your body. You can rub the scented oil into your temples or burn the aroma while closing your eyes and taking deep breaths.

    • 4

Keep your air purified. Some headaches are caused by unhealthy particles floating in the air. Use a negative ion purifier to remove these unhealthy particles from the air. Remember to replace the filters as directed to ensure your air stays healthy.

    • 5

Increase the oxygen in your body. Severe headaches can be a symptom of not getting enough oxygen. When we are anxious we aren't breathing correctly which starves our body of oxygen. Take deep breathes often to prevent severe headaches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider discussing your symptoms with a doctor. If you aren't getting any relief from your headaches you should discuss options with your doctor. Sometimes medications such as Topamax are needed to deal with severe headaches and migraines.

  • Ask about conditions that may be causing your headaches. Severe headaches can be a symptom of an underlying medical condition. Ask your doctor to run tests for a possible underlying condition if your severe headaches don't go away.
