You can grow just about anything from seed. Start with seeds that are easy to germinate, such as zinnias and marigolds, and then move on to those that need more precise conditions.

Seeds of half-hardy plants or those with more particular needs should be sown in a tray and raised in a controlled environment before planting out. You will find that not only is sowing your own seeds economical, but it's very rewarding.

Things You'll Need:

  • Trays Multipurpose or seed soil mix Ruler or popsicle stick Seeds Paper Sheet of plastic or glass Pots
  1. Step 1

Plan a time to sow seeds. The time of sowing depends on the seed type. Most annuals need to be sown in late winter or early spring, but always check the packet for details of when to sow and any special needs. Most seeds, especially those that are sensitive to temperature and humidity changes, should be covered with a sheet of glass to give them additional protection.

  2. Step 2

Gather your materials. You will need several trays, multipurpose or seed soil mix, ruler, seeds, paper, sheet of glass or plastic. If materials are dirty wash them and allow them to dry completely.

  3. Step 3

Fill the seed tray with dry multipurpose or seed soil mix. Using your fingers pack the soil loosely in the bottom of the trays. The soil should be firm but crumble when pinched between your fingers.

  4. Step 4

Level the soil mix with a ruler or popsicle stick and firm to about half an inch below the rim. The soil should be packed firmly but should allow drainage. Water the trays and leave for 30 minutes. When you return, the water should have been absorbed into the soil. If the tray is still retaining water, wait 10 minutes. If the tray is still holding water then make a small hole at the base of the tray.

  5. Step 5

Sprinkle the seed using a folded paper as a funnel. Cover with a fine layer of soil mix and then place glass over the tray. Do not mix seeds in trays.

  6. Step 6

Care for the seeds as directed on the packaging. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, pick them out. Always hold them by the seed leaves, the lowest ones, and never by the stems or top leaves.

  7. Step 7

Discard any weak or damaged ones, and plant the rest into pots or trays. Grow on and harden off the seedlings before planting out.
