Paint a Chalkboard
Paint a Chalkboard
M. Kaye Hash

There are many different ways you can use a chalkboard that you have painted yourself. You can paint a chalkboard on wood with a "Home Sweet Home" sign to hang in your living room or use as a grocery list on a chalkboard for your kitchen. You could even paint a schoolroom or conference room scene in which you would have a chalkboard standing in the corner. Follow these steps the next time that your creative streak sets in.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Acrylic paint Canvas Paintbrush
  1. Step 1

Decide what color to paint the background of your canvas. Choose any color you would like for the background. Do not paint the background a dark color that will blend with the chalkboard, such as brown or black. Paint the background to look like a schoolhouse wall, a conference room, or leave it plain. Allow to dry.

  2. Step 2

Spread a coat of brown paint over the background. The brown should be in the shape of a rectangle. The rectangle of brown will be the back of the chalkboard. Let the paint completely dry, and then add a smaller rectangle of black inside the brown rectangle. Be sure to leave a frame of brown showing around the black rectangle.

  3. Step 3

Allow for less drying time and while the black rectangle is still wet, paint over it with a dark gray paint. Allow them to blend a bit to try for that almost black, almost gray color of an actual chalkboard. Do not paint anymore until the layers are no longer tacky.

  4. Step 4

Create a shelf on the bottom of the chalkboard. Paint a trapezoid with gray paint. Place the short side against the bottom of the chalkboard back and the long side against the bottom of the gray rectangle. This is where the chalk will sit.

  5. Step 5

Mix a tiny amount of white with the dark gray used for the chalkboard. Brush it lightly across the dark gray to give the impression of erased chalk. Mix another tiny amount of white with the gray used for the shelf. Brush lightly across the shelf to add dimension. Add a pedestal stand to hold the chalkboard up.

  6. Step 6

Add details to finish the painting. Write or draw pictures with white paint on the chalkboard, such as writing the word cat or drawing a stick figure. Paint a couple pieces of chalk sitting on the shelf. Add any details you would like to the background, such as a clock above the chalkboard or a window looking out.
