Instructions

    • 1

Search for some old bed frame rails at your local junk yard or buy them cheap at a consignment store. You will also need old wood posts. Keep in mind that bench posts are solid and strong.

    • 2

Use a drill press, a high speed air drill and a metal cut-off saw to cut the rails to 29 inches each, and to drill holes into the ends of each rail an inch from the edge.

    • 3

Using a drill gun, drill holes into the wood posts at the locations where you will install the rails. Use a tape measure and a carpenter's square to make sure that your holes are even. Space the holes at least a foot apart.

    • 4

Purchase a 1-by-6 board and cut it into two equal pieces, 1 1/2 feet each. Buy two heavy duty plastic stands with a hole in the center of each of the size of your posts.

    • 5

Insert one post into each stand. Place the stands on the boards, and spread the boards apart the length of your rails. With a screw gun and wood screws, secure the stands to the boards on each side.

    • 6

Place a bed frame so one end lays on one board, and the other end lays on the other board. Using nuts and bolts, tack down the frames to the boards, one on each side of the posts.

    • 7

Insert the remaining metal bed frames to the wood posts also using nuts and bolts. Tighten the bolts securely. If you need more space between the metal frames, cut out small blocks of wood and place them between the frame and the post.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any metal bars or rods will work instead of bed rails, and any wooden posts will work as well. The goal is to make sure that the materials are strong enough to support the weight of the dumbbells.

  • Bed rails are extremely hard metal. Do not attempt to cut them with a hacksaw or drill holes with a simple hand drill.
