There is no hard and fast rule for how to determine a woman's jean size. There are many factors that can influence how jeans fit. Different brands vary in sizing. Some say more expensive jeans (think upwards of 150 dollars) fit better. Others say that is hype and jeans found at lower budget retail outlets, like Target, fit great. Armed with only a soft tape measure, you can get a little closer to determining the right size for you.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1
    Inseam end point measurements

    Inseam end point measurements

Measure your inseam. This is the length of your body from your crotch to your ankle. Stand up straight. This measurement will help you determine the length of jeans you need. Keep in mind if you will be wearing heels, you might want a longer cut and if you will be wearing flats, you may want a shorter one.

  2. Step 2

Measure your waist. A jean that is sized according to your length and waist will probably be easier to fit than one that is sized just by numbers, like 4, 8 or 12. For example if your waist is 30 inches and your length is 32 inches, look for jeans that are sized 30 x 32.

Determine what "rise" you will need. Take a pair of jeans that you like. Lay them on a flat surface. Measure from the top of the waistband to the bottom of the crotch seam. A low rise measures at about 8 to 9 inches. Mid rise is approximately 9.5 to 10 inches. A jean that sits at the waist will have a 10- to 11-inch measurement.
