Getting yourself into the classroom might be an even easier road then once you get there and have to actually teach the students. Follow these guidelines and you will be on your way to your first substitute teaching position in California.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • List of the public schools you want to work at and their contact information Copy of your college transcripts Department of Justice fingerprint clearance
  1. Step 1

Get a four-year college degree in any subject from an accredited college or university. Once you've graduated, contact your college and request an official copy of your college transcript. When it arrives, do not open it. It needs to stay sealed to remain official.

  2. Step 2

Sign up to take the California Basic Educational Skills (CBEST) test. There are many sites that offer the test all over the state.
This test covers basic skills in math, reading comprehension and writing.

  3. Step 3

Get fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice. This can cost anywhere from $35 to $50. Some school districts may reimburse you so save your receipt.

  4. Step 4

Following these steps will allow you to teach for a year, with a maximum of 30 days in any one classroom.

Tips & Warnings
  • The CBEST is usually offered just a few times a year, so plan ahead.
