During these challenging economic times, we all need to stretch our dollars and make the gas in our tank last as long as possible. The following are ways in which you can gain more mileage from a single tank of gas.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • full tank of gas
  • empty trunk
  • tires full of air
  • friends/associates to carpool with
  • patience
  • OPTIONAL: locking gas cap
  1. Step 1

Once you pump your tank full of gas, make sure your gas cap is on securely so you won't experience any leakage of precious gas into the atmosphere.

  2. Step 2

Make sure you empty the trunk of any unnecessary cargo, as this adds weight to your vehicle and causes you to use more gas. This includes golf clubs, kitty litter or dog food; things of this nature which can be easily stored in places other than your trunk. In winter months you may want this extra weight to help balance the vehicle during foul weather. However, for all intents and purposes it is best to keep your trunk free and clear of any excess weight.

  3. Step 3

Try to run several errands during the same outing. For instance, if you know you will be going to the grocery store, returning videos, and picking up dry cleaning, it is far more economical to run your car once instead of making several smaller trips.

  4. Step 4

Try reducing unnecessary trips in your car by either walking or riding your bicycle to nearby attractions--the exercise is good for your mind and body, and the emissions savings from your vehicle are good for the environment.

  5. Step 5

Think about either car pooling, van-sharing, riding public transportation or possibly working with your employer at establishing an alternative workweek schedule so you are on the road less during the week. There are websites on line to see whether there are people in your area willing to carpool with you and not only is this a great way to save you some gas money and help out the environment, but it will give you someone to talk to en route to work. Even car pooling once or twice a week will help in your effort at making the gas in your tank go farther.

  6. Step 6

Studies have shown that fueling up during the evening hours is more economical on your wallet and Earth-friendly with gas.

  7. Step 7

Turn off the air in the summer months and same goes with the heat in the winter--every bit helps.

  8. Step 8

You might need to invest in a locking gas cap (found at any local auto-parts dealer) if you suspect unsavory characters might be stealing your gas; don't laugh, this happened to me. I feel a lot safer with the locked gas cap, knowing that it is I who is using all the gas in my tank and not some crook who stole it from my tank.

  9. Step 9

Check to be sure your tires are full of air. If you don't know how to do this, ask an attendant to assist you. You need an air tank, a few quarters, (even air isn't free!) and a tire guauge.

  10. Step 10

Most importantly, the number one thing you can do to stretch your gallon of gas is to drive the speed limit. By slowing your speed down below 60 MPH, you will not be wasting gas due to unsteady fluctuations caused by the constant stop/start of your pressure on the gas pedal. Besides which, travelling at reduced speeds is safer; so slow down and enjoy the scenery!

    Happy motoring!

on 3/17/2009 Great points! I also try and plan ahead, so I don't have to slam on the brakes at stoplights, so instead of that gas going to making my brakes wear out faster, it stays in the tank until I need it.
