Houseplants help bring the outdoors in and both beautify your surroundings and help clean the air. If you are like me though, your plants have been subjected to a little bit of neglect and just need the smallest amount of attention to be full and green instead of with too much stem and not enough leaves. This simple technique will help you to grow bushier, more attractive houseplants that will look lovely and process even more clean air.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Houseplant
  • Thumb and a pointer finger
  • Indoor houseplant food
  1. Step 1

Apply the indoor houseplant food to your plant according to the manufacturer's instructions

  2. Step 2

Check back on your plant over the next week or so until you see new leaves just starting to come out.

  3. Step 3

Find shoots that are at on stems you want more leaves on. The farther to the end of the stem the better (at least the first time you pinch).

  4. Step 4

Pinch the shoot between your thumb and pointer finger and gently remove it.

  5. Step 5

New growth will come in below the point at which you pinched off the leaf bud, thus helping to fill in the empty stem.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pinching works better by far than cutting.
  • You may have to pinch off new growth a few times, but follow the plant food instructions for when to feed your plant or you may end up negating your 'work'.
