Step 1
Arrange for overnight sitters. This is a great time to ask Grandpa and Grandma to take the kiddos for a week end or trade week ends with a friend. Somehow, try to arrange an overnight sitter so you can plan a get a way.
-
Step 2
Make a plan with the girls. Just as your husband makes plans for deer camp, make a plan with some girlfriends to stay at a hotel or maybe a day at the spa. If money is a bit tight, budget this trip in just as you budget your husbands hunting trip.
-
Step 3
Let a few things go. Pancakes for supper? You bet! Maybe let the laundry go for a day or even skip the dishes (*gasp!). Enjoy yourself and make a plan to get some good relaxing in.
-
Step 4
Plan something fun with your kids. Maybe you can make your own tradition. You kids will remember "Every year when dad went to deer camp, we ______." Maybe it is taking the kids to a special movie or event or maybe just taking the kids to Grandpa and Grandmas for ice cream. Whatever it is, make it special and the kids will remember it.
-
Step 5
Let a kid sleep in bed with you. Each night pick a child to sleep in daddy' s spot in the bed. This will again make a great memory for your child and they will come to look forward to the time daddy is gone instead of dread it.

on 12/15/2008 What about the hunter who goes every Saturday and Sunday from 5:00 a.m. -8:00 p.m., for four whole months? Every weekend, I am left alone. My kids are grown and live out of state and I am new to the area and I don't know anybody, yet. So needless to say the house gets pretty empty. I am seeking counseling because it is pretty darn lonely.

on 11/17/2008 I have a family birthday calendar... my husband has an 'every hunting season under the rainbow' calendar. Don't know why, he has them all memorized. If he isn't working, he's hunting. Great ideas you offer.

on 11/17/2008 My dad was a pilot and would be gone for days at a time. These are great ideas for anyone with an absent spouse.
