Things You'll Need:
- The desire to learn more about quilting.
-
Step 1
Quilting requires more investment to get started as far as supplies, so if possible I would suggest working with a local quilting group first (do a search on your city + quilting). This way you can get exposure to it and see if it is something you'd like to do long-term. This can also allow you to get local tips of where to get good deals on supplies.
-
Step 2
Your sewing machine will probably be your biggest initial expense--and buying one specifically signed for quilters will save you a lot of time and hassle. If possible, try out potential sewing machines before buying--this can even allow you to buy online and save money. It doesn't hurt to check eBay, Craigslist, and similar sites to see if you can get a deal from someone who may not be quilting anymore.
-
Step 3
Other supplies including a sewing light (the ones with a magnifier built-in are very handy, a 1/4" foot and "walking foot" for the sewing machine, needles for your machine (size 11/75), tread (100% cotton is best), a steam iron, a pressing pad, scissors (two types; dressmaker and embroidery), quilting pins and holder, curved safety pins, a tape measure, and a quilter's seam ripper. Rotary cutting tools are optional but extremely helpful. All of these supplies can be bought online or at your local craft store.
-
Step 4
Below I'm going to link you to historical sites and beginner's tutorials on various websites. These should get you off to a good start. Have fun!

on 1/21/2009 Good ideas on how to get started. It does take a bit of time to purchase the items needed, but eventually you'll have a great stash of fabric and all the tools you need.
