Step 1
Spend time when you think of domain names. You want something special that will represent what you are doing and stick in people's minds.
-
Step 2
Brainstorm a list of possible domain names. Keep each name easy to spell and not to long. Avoid picking domain names with letters, hyphens or other characters.
-
Step 3
Focus on selecting a .com domain name. In most cases people type in .com not .net or .org.
-
Step 4
Check to see if the domain names are in use at checkdomain.com. Type in the domain names and see if they are available or you can check at sites where you register a domain like ipower and godaddy.
-
Step 5
If the domain name you like is in use, look it up at www.whois.ws to see the ownership and consider contacting them to see if they will transfer the domain name to you for a fee.
-
Step 6
Or add something to the domain name to make it different. Words like "the" or "my" can be added to the beginning of a domain name.
-
Step 7
If you still cannot think of domain names sign up for AmazonTurks and have the workers there come up with one for you or sign up at pickdomains.com and have writers offer name suggestions.

on 11/30/2008 Great info! Might I suggest using a domain name generator as well like the one at http://www.nameboy.com. You put in a few key words and domain names are created and checked for availability. Pretty cool!
